More About The Sydney Airport
The Sydney Airport, also known as the Kingsford-Smith International Airport, is located in the area of Macscot, in Sydney, Australia. Up until the 1920's, it was mere pasture land for cows, but was leased by Nigel Love to use for aviation. It was ideal to use for take-offs and landings thanks to the even grazing of the animals! Only in 1933 were gravel runways constructed. In 1953, the airport officially became known as Kingford-Smith, after a pioneering pilot from the area. In 1970 a new international terminal was unveiled to serve the needs of a growing tourism industry and of course advances in aviation popularity.
Today, Sydney Airport is the only airport in the city, and is a major hub for many air carriers, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, JetStar Airways, and Tiger Airways Australia. It is the busiest airport in the country of Australia, and currently the 29th busiest airport in the world. In the last year alone, nearly 40 million passengers passed through the airport. There are three terminals currently in operation, one of which is dedicated entirely to overseas travel. Aside from domestic flights to virtually every airport domestically, there are also flights to destinations such as Hong Kong, Vancouver, Singapore, and Los Angeles. There is a curfew for airplanes taking off and landing at the airport, with no flights being allowed between the hours of 11pm and 6am.
The airport's terminals have all the amenities travelers have come to expect in a modern facility: bathrooms, ATMs, baggage storage, a pharmacy, currency exchange, a medical center, and an information desk. In addition, there are a number of dining establishments found in all three terminals. There are plenty of options for a quick sandwich or coffee if you're short on time, or impressive Japanese and Italian restaurants if you have more time to savor a delicious meal. Stop by for a quick drink in one of the friendly bars before your flight takes off. There is also a great selection of retail shops, including duty free stores for those traveling internationally.
